Vancouver has 180 tennis courts for public use. Below we highlight a few of them. Included are Stanley Park Tennis Courts, Kitsilano Beach Tennis Courts, Queen Elizabeth Courts, and Sutcliffe Park by Granville Island.

Garden Park and Langara Courts are two other sites not listed here that have well finished courts. A list of all public courts can be found on the Vancouver Park Board website.

Kamloops Open Tennis Tournament

The Sunshine Open is a great tennis tournament held in Kamloops the second weekend in August. The tournament is hosted at the Kamloops Tennis Association club and on some of the fine Kamloops public tennis courts (all the courts I visited were US open surfacing).

This is a power packed weekend of tennis with two levels of singles, doubles and mixed doubles categories. If you enter two events you are sure to play anywhere from 6 to 8 two set matches and if you advance from your box some additional best out of three matches. This is a huge tennis weekend.

It is important to bring plenty of fluids and sunscreen as a couple of the years I went to this tournament they had 40 degrees celsius temperatures.

Hosted by the fine people of the Kamloops Tennis Club this one is a must.

Enjoy!!!

Grant Connell Indoor Tennis Centre

Grant Connell Tennis Centre located at 280 Lloyd Avenue in North Vancouver is the best indoor facility open to the general public and having reasonable fees.

This facility has 6 well lighted indoor courts. The courts are in building and not a bubble and the temperature is nice inside. This along with a full tennis program makes this a great spot for people from all around Vancouver.

To get a booking card requires you go on a waiting list because of the popularity of the centre. Booking cards are in the neighbourhood of $100. The card gives the holder the ability to book a week ahead.

People without booking cards are able to book with 24 hours notice and the centre keeps some courts aside for this during the week.

Granville Island Tennis Courts - Sutcliffe Park

The two Granville Island tennis courts are beside the False Creek Community Centre along with the outdoor sport/basketball court. A third court can be set up on the sport court but that is rare. Once one of our favourite places to play they are getting worn and could use an upgrade.

Key features here is it is by the water, has building which reduce the wind and is the only set of public courts in Vancouver under lights.

The False Creek Tennis Club plays out of these courts on Sunday mornings.

Queen Elizabeth park is one of the highest point of the city and has spectactular view. On the park are 17 tennis courts. These courts are unfinished and are by some basketball courts and inline hockey rinks.

This site has a lot of potential and an active tennis community with the Queen Elizabeth tennis club (call 604-257-8130 for more info) playing out of here.

Kitsilano Beach Tennis Courts

Kitsilano Beach has many activities including swimming, volleyball, basketball, sunbathing and more. Included in this active park are 10 tennis courts.

Five of the courts are painted surface and the other five are asphalt grey. There is also a hitting wall which is great for picking up games. There is an energetic crowd at the courts.

These courts are in need of some work but their location is spectacular and makes a great day.

Stanley Park Tennis Courts

The Stanley Park Tennis courts (circled in red on the satelight image below) are located on the English Bay side entrance to Stanley Park.

The site includes 17 public courts in good condition. The six courts to the south are used for pay tennis. The site is a nice natural setting amongst the trees by English Bay. One natural part of the courts more recenlty has been the nesting of Herons. It is often good to pick your court wisely.

These courts are home to the Stanley Park Tennis Tournament often referred to as the largest tennis tournament in the North America and once listed in Guiness as the largest in the world, with entries for young, old, wheel chair, and all levels including an open category.

Close by at Lost Lagoon courts which have been recently rebuilt due to a donation. This is another beautiful setting although the area around the courts is small. These courts are outlined in blue in the satellite photo below.
