Pilates (say: pu-lah-tees) was created by Josef H. Pilates, over 75 years ago.
It is a no impact, mind-body series of exercises that is an excellent compliment to any training regimen. Pilates is used to increase range of motion, flexibility and coordination while developing core muscular stability in the trunk and joints. Breathing techniques increase oxygen capacity and calm the participant.
Pilates gained notoriety in the New York dance community with people such as George Balanchine and Martha Graham. Over the years it has gained popularity people from all walks of life.
An individual participating in Pilates exercise more than twice a week will observe noticeable improvements in posture, flexibility, abdominal and back strength as well as overall strength and coordination. Done regularly, the Pilates workout results in long, lean, strong muscles.
