Laser Eye Surgery

Friends had mentioned I should have laser eye surgery. I said I would never do it because I did not want the risk on something so important as my site.

It was just about then I needed bi-focals and I went and got some new eye glasses and some progressive lenses. I lost the glasses and that mixed with the fact that my contact lenses bothered my dry eyes significantly lead me to investigate...

...laser surgery.

I started on the net and found out there were two types of laser eye surgery.

On first look the PRK looked more interesting because there was no cutting of a flap which worried me. In this method they laser directly to the outer eye and change the shape to improve the vision.

The other type was lasik, which requires a micro thin flap be cut and pulled back and the laser shapes the corneal tissue behind the flap.

It was explained to me that particulalry for stronger perscription the lasik method is more preferred. With lasik the outer flap is not compromised by the laser and this can improve the chances of good night vision. Also for more extreme corrections the PRK could impact the outer tissue too greatly. A big advantage to the lasik is the recovery is way speedier with vision coming back in a day rather than PRK with recovery measured in weeks.

After looking at the internet I went to my eye doctor and told him I had had it with all the lenses and wanted to try the surgery. He told me that there was only one referral he would do and that was to David Lim at Pacific Laser Eye Centre.

I also checked with a number of people I knew and they also had used Dr. Lim and recomended it. So I took the plunge.

First thing they did was do a thorough examination of my eyes and then I had a short consultation with Dr. Lim who told me he could do it and they recomended the lasik procedure. One thing I had to do was promise not to rub my eyes for three months after the surgery. I have itchy eyes but felt this was important enough that I could get through it. Protective glasses help to keep you from rubbing your eyes when you sleep.

I made my appointment and waited patiently for the day to come. When it did I had a friend take me to and from the centre and I stayed at their place over the first night.

The process was quite simple. They gave me some pills to relax me and some drops to numb my eyes. The who process went quite quickly and was pain free.

It has been a year and a half since I did it and I would not do anything different. I do have some distortion in my vision in poor light or night time but I have gotten used to it. This has become more rare I am told as all my friends who had it done have not reported this.

I can see well and now do not need any lenses for skiing, tennis, camping, kayaking and all the other things I love to do. Also not wearing contact lenses has been healthier for my eye.

If you are thinking about this then see your eye doctor to get a referral and all the info you require.

Back Pain Therapy

I have always had back pain since my mid thirties. I have a long torso in comparison to my legs and through a variety of sports and outdoor activities, along with lazy posture have worn my back down.

For most of the years it would hurt but I could warm it up and get going until lately. For a year and a half I feel like I waddle when I run and bending and pivoting for sports seemed...

...impossible. I started to become very ineffective.

As I tried to push myself things got worse and eventually it became difficult to go for a short walk.

I read up as much as I could and tried many stretches, alot for my Piriformis, I found from the web for sciatic pain. Although there would be small relief it never amounted to being able to be active.

At this point I was going to get the orthopedic specialist to check me for an operation but that made me worry as people had told me there was about a 50% success rate.

Just before getting an appointment a friend told me about his neck was virtually fused and how he was scheduled for surgery. Before surgery he a Physio who followed a system called the McKenzie method. He did not have to go in for surgery and has regained his full range of motion now.

In this system the Physio, Colin Davies, puts you through a thorough examination finding out what positions, movements and situations cause your pain. Form this assessment you receive simple exercise and postural instructions.

Once it is determined what are the moves to correct your discomfort and problem, then you can do them yourself. This was good for me because of the many appointments I was doing with a Chiropractor and Massage Therapist were taking a lot of time and money.

My back still needs to become more limber but I am now moving better, playing sports again and feeling great compared to a couple of months ago.

If you have this type of discomfort this could be a solution. For more Health and Fitness.

Quitting Smoking

How I came to quit smoking was not the way I ever figured it would be. I had tried all sorts of things including toughing it out cold turkey, chewing gum, working out constantly, hitting tennis balls, shooting baskets and more. I had not tried the patch or any drugs as I wanted to go a more natural way.

I was not a proud smoker. Having a life of sports, outdoors and fitness I was ashamed...

...of the fact I smoked and many people at work and other places were not aware I smoked. I kept it in the underground except when I was out in bars or other socials. This went on for 24 years.

After failing a number of times a Chinese Medicine doctor told me she had a large number of patients who had quit reading a book. I was skeptical as I had read quit smoking books myself without success. She said that many of them were suprized.

Since I had nothing to lose I bought the book "Allen Carr's Easy Way To Quit Smoking". There is a link below to info including the book and seminars. I would recomend trying the book at under $20 when I bought it compared to the seminars are expensive over $400.

So I took the book out one day and read it through that day and the next. It is a short book of no more than 150 pages and it is easy reading. I put the book down after finishing on Sunday and said to myself it was worth a try but I did not feel different. Something was different because I did not have another cigarette for six months.

Unfortunately after six months, in a stressful social situation with alcohol, I broke down. I then smoked for another 3 years before trying the book again. I read it and again I did not smoke but now I do not drink much anymore and I have not had a cigarette for nearly four years.

I sing the praises of the book to my friends who still smoke but it does not work for all of them. I think going in a person must have a certain frame of mine with two ideals:

  • You need to want to quit.
  • You need to not be a righteous smoker.

After this then the book can work it's magic.

How does it do it? It certainly does not convince you - that is why I did not think it had an effect the first time I read it. It seems more of a type of brainwashing that make you want to celebrate quitting rather than feeling tourtured, give images of competing with a little monster that I found made cravings not a problem, and images of that you are a trapped slave freeing yourself. Sounds wierd but if you seriously want to try quitting give the paperback a try. I did not think I would ever get free but now I am and I reap the benefits of health, social acceptance and cost saving.

I am sure there are many ways that have worked for people but I found this one pain free. It's worth a try. Good Luck! For more Health and Fitness.
