Angel Strehlen

School of Art

Angel is a fine artist, calligrapher with over 25 years teaching experience.

Angel Strehlen was born in Vancouver and has been an artist since she could hold a crayon. She has worked with materials and mediums such as oil, acrylic, watercolor, gouache, egg tempera, inks, pastel, pencil, fabric, pattern making, needlework, leather, and wood, special effects make-up, to name a few. She has worked for made-for-T.V. movies including “Voyage of the Unicorn” and “Wrinkle in Time”, as well as doing make-up for fashion photography.

Angel began teaching at the Victoria Y.M.C.A. in 1982. Since then she has been an art instructor at community centers and galleries, across Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland, including the Victoria Art Gallery and the Artworks Studio of a senior's care home. She has taught painting, pottery, drawing, calligraphy, weaving and other crafts. She specializes in working with beginner artists.

She prefers the term “self-guided” artist as opposed to a “self-taught” artist, having looked for instruction specific to her vision. This includes personal critiques from Jack Shadbolt, Joe Average, Dene Croft and Jack Wise. She has supplimented her studies through classes at the Victoria College of Art, Emily Carr College of Art, Camosun College and has well as working in collaboration with many artists.

Angel has owned and operated several galleries in Victoria and Vancouver including Art m'us and Gallery 46 and has participated in several artists collectives. She presently owns and operates a gallery/tattoo shop in Vnacouver. Angel has collectors in Canada and the U.S. including the Sechelt Indian Band, on the Sunshine Coast where her portrait of “Mary Jane Jackson” holds center stage in the community hall.

She has guided art students of all ages in an exploration of different mediums and techniques to find their personal style. She has taught students with disabilities to discover their abilities and create artwork to express their ideas and personal stories. Angel has the ability to free up students to enjoy art making. Her philosophy is that we can all tap into our innate creativity, through simple methods that open new perceptions.
"Everyone has the ability to experience the freedom of art. By recognizing the inspiration in our day-to-day world, we can ultimately find ways to express our very personal, inner vision."
